专题简介 (Session Description):

Space weather has different effects on multiple technological systems and infrastructures. For example, the ground induced currents during geomagnetic storms present a risk to the reliable operation of electric power systems and may affect gas and oil pipelines, railways, and other infrastructures which have long conductive paths; changes of the near-Earth radiation environment can affect satellite operations, astronauts’ health, commercial space activities, and the radiation environment on aircraft at relevant latitudes or altitudes; ionospheric disturbances can disturb radio signals that propagate through the upper atmosphere, disrupting communication, navigation, and surveillance capabilities over wide areas on timescales ranging from minutes to hours; solar radio bursts are radio wave emissions from the sun that can bring disturbances to radar, communication, and tracking signals; the heating in the upper atmosphere which is driven by solar activities can have significant impacts on LEO space-crafts by increasing atmospheric drag; etc. This session will mainly focus on: (1) effects of multi- space weather activities on different technological systems and infrastructures; and (2) assessing the vulnerability of critical infrastructure systems in space weather disasters.
